Book About Dr. Sebi Is A Potential Companion for Health and Wellness Initiatives of Black Greek Sororities and Fraternities

Seven Days in Usha Village: A Conversation With Dr. Sebi 20 Years Later is Dr. Sebi’s storytelling, his answers to my questions, but more than that the book, in many ways, supports the healthcare strategies Black Greek sororities and fraternities use to educate and serve their communities.

A pivotal chapter in the book’s 20th anniversary remembrance of my interview with Dr. Sebi is “Dr. Sebi Shared More That Week in Honduras: His Methodology.” He mentions two major components of his life as an herbalist: Usha Herbal Research Institute and his African Bio Mineral Balance therapy. That chapter details how these entities address and provide alternative solutions for diseases that afflict thousands but disproportionately affect Black people—diabetes, leukemia, menopause, sickle cell anemia and prostate cancer.

The book offers Black sororities and fraternities complementary information and solutions for the following health and wellness initiatives:

Prostate Cancer Awareness

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Black men, who are diagnosed at younger ages and at later stages than any other group. Omega Psi Phi has carried prostate cancer awareness as a mandated international program for over thirty years — the Mighty Seventh District runs the program year-round, with peak activity each September during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. –Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Health Initiatives

Chapters facilitate, participate, and coordinate activities that promote good health practices. Programs include the Charles R. Drew Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. Additionally, our partnerships with the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, and the March of Dimes continue to grow. –Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Advocacy for Education and Public Health

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.’s initiative for education and public health advocacy underscores its commitment to ensuring equal educational opportunities for all. This targeted program mobilizes both collegiate and alumni chapters to engage in advocacy efforts, including participation in educational forums and direct engagement with policymakers on educational and public health issues. Recognizing the intrinsic link between education and health outcomes, the initiative aims to influence policy, promote community awareness, and improve access to education and health resources. –Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Our Community Initiatives, Partnerships and Programs
